6 DIY Tricks To Keep Your Vegetables Last Longer

Making fresh fruits and veggies a part of your daily diet is a healthy decision as it contributes to the vitamins and minerals sector of the body. The only condition here is that they should be fresh, the last thing one can do regularly, is making time to go out and buy fresh vegetables for himself due to many factors, time being one of the major. So the alternative for that is food preservation, we preserve our food in the refrigerator in the hopes that our fruits and vegetables would remain fresh but about a handful amount of times, we have been proven wrong because we have been preserving food in the wrong way, check out the right way;

1.    Keep them separated

When “preserving your food” in the refrigerator, make sure to keep them separated as ripe fruits tend to release ethylene gas which reduces the lifespan of vegetables by increasing the ripening process of it. To our convenience, refrigerators nowadays come with separate compartments to store fruits and vegetables separately.

2.    Separate your Potatoes and Onion

Just like we need to separate our fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator, similarly, we need to separate our potatoes and onions from each other, as onions make them rot faster than usual and potatoes should be stored in a cool dark place to prolong their lifespan.

3.    Garlic in Oil

Here’s an unbelievable way of storing Garlic that you had no idea about, apply some mustard oil on the garlic cloves you want to store, allow them to dry in sunlight, afterwards take a glass jar (make sure it is moisture free), fill that jar with the garlic cloves that have been marinated and dried out. This way you can store your garlic for a long time especially during the monsoon.

4.    Lemons in Ice cold water

As per my prior mention, the best way to store fruits and veggies is by refrigerating them. Whereas, the best way to preserve your lemons is to keep them in ice cold water and then restore them in a refrigerator, following this tip can help you preserve the lemons for a time span of 2 to 3 months.

5.    Use Punctured bags the preservation

When you are preserving food, make sure to use punctured or perforated bags you need to keep them loosely packed and not tightly.  Perforated bags come in handy while storing vegetables, because it would help to let the air in and out, if you do not have perforated polythene bags, you can make a few ones for yourself by making holes in a normal one.

6.    Onions in the Newspapers

Other than just keeping the onions separated from potatoes, here’s a tip which can help to keep your onion last longer: wrap them in a newspaper and then store them in a cool and a dry place, this can keep your onions last longer than usual.
